Luke Combs has won “Single of the Year” at the Country Music Awards for “Fast Car”; and Tracy Chapman has won “Song of the Year,” the first time for an African American in the organization’s 57-year history. Some folks argue that Luke Combs, reaching the top of the country charts and winning this award is exploitative because she wouldn’t have made it onto the country charts in 1988.I’ve loved Tracy Chapman’s music for a long time. I was present that “fateful night” on May 3, 1985, at The Strand Theater in Boston’s Dorchester neighborhood, when, as producer Polly Laurelchild recounts, she opened for Casselberry-Dupree, opening act for headliner, Linda Tillery. Chapman, an undergrad who had done some singing around Harvard Square, blew the audience away. The bashful 21-year-old stepped from the wings with her acoustic guitar, stood in the corner of the stage, in front of the curtain, sang two songs, and earned a spontaneous standing O.In 1988, not long after Chapman graduated from Tu...Letters: Democrats made the property tax fix way too partisan

I knew it would have had unintended consequences and there would have been follow-up legislation or ballot measures to “fix” the mess. Observing the legislature’s slap-dash, let’s get-outta-here-before-Thanksgiving approach, I see the same thing. Before summer the unintended consequences of the current blob of bills will begin to become apparent. Predictably, at that point, Republicans will say, “I told you so,” but their fervent devotion to TABOR wore thin 25 years ago. “If I had a chance to tell Gov. (Gavin) Newsom something about the pollution in the Tijuana River Valley, I would tell him to get it fixed as soon as possible because the odor is horrible, and I don’t know what else it’s doing to our health. Like my partner says, if this was happening to rich people in La Jolla, this would have been taken care of a long time ago.”That’s what Analisa Corrales, a nine-year resident of the Nestor neighborhood in San Diego, told me when I asked how she felt about the pollution from the Tijuana River Valley and how aerosolized contaminants might be affecting the health of her and her three children. They are 12 years old, 7 years old and 6 months old, and they live less than 2 miles from the sewage-choked river.“My son is constantly congested with allergies and has stomach aches. My 7-year-old has allergies, too,” Corrales said. “I’m sure it has something to do with the air we breathe, and I’m worried about the health of my baby.”The stench is so unbeara...The five most expensive homes reported sold in Fremont in the week of Nov. 13

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Coaches will do anything they can to motivate new players for a rivalry game.Speeches, videos, bringing back former players — anything to get them to understand the importance of beating their rival.Arizona coach Jedd Fisch’s tactic for Saturday’s game at Arizona State is simple.“I just showed them the billboard,” he said this week. The billboard was put up by Arizona State fans on Interstate 10 between Tempe and Tucson after the Sun Devils’ 70-7 blowout in 2020.The sign with “No pity for the kitty” bracketed by the score of the game is no longer there — Fisch showed the team a picture — but the memory is a reminder to Wildcats fans how far the program has come.Coach Kevin Sumlin was fired shortly after the beatdown in Tucson and Fisch was hired as his replacement, inheriting a 12-game losing streak that would stretch to a school-record 20. Arizona finished that season 1-11, but Fisch still managed to pull in a stellar recruiting class that...Papa Francisco sobre el conflicto entre Israel y Hamas: “Esto no es guerra, esto es terrorismo”

A cease-fire agreement between the Hamas militant group and Israel has been confirmed by both parties, along with Washington and Qatar, which helped broker the deal that would bring a temporary halt to the devastating war that is now in its seventh week. The Israeli government said that under an outline of the deal, Hamas is to free over a four-day period at least 50 of the roughly 240 hostages taken in its Oct. 7 attack on Israel, and Israel is to release some Palestinian prisoners in exchange. Egyptian state media say the truce will begin Thursday morning. Egypt helped mediate the cease-fire agreement, which would bring the first respite to war-weary Palestinians in Gaza, where more than 11,000 people have been killed, according to health authorities.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said before the Cabinet voted early Wednesday to back the agreement that the war would continue even if a deal was reached.
