Firefighters from Ontario are on their way to Alberta to help battle the raging wildfires that have forced thousands from their homes, and sent smoke as far away as the GTA.As of early Wednesday morning, Alberta’s wildfire status dashboard was reporting 81 active wildfires in the province, including 27 listed as out of control.Firefighters from Yukon, British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec have arrived in the province to help, and the government said late Tuesday that crews were also expected from New Brunswick, Oregon and Alaska. The province says fire danger continues to be extreme in most of the province except the Rockies, where lower danger levels were expected. Some areas have experienced cooler temperatures and some rain, but the government says a return to hot and windy conditions is expected in the coming days.Indigenous Services Canada said Tuesday that nine First Nations were under threat by active wildfires. One of them was Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation, about 360 kilometre...Ukrainian singer Jamala to perform new album for Eurovision

LONDON (AP) — Jamala and the orchestra were supposed be on stage, but they are sheltering in a basement.Warnings of shelling and missile attacks had them below ground at the Kyiv Opera House instead of getting ready to perform for an audience. The Ukrainian singer was at the venue to debut a selection of songs from her new album “Qirim” — a collection of Crimean Tatar tracks that was years in the making.Musicians, sound engineers and lighting technicians were sheltering with her, waiting for the air raid threat to pass.“It’s not normal, but, you know, it’s our life. It’s our everyday life in Kyiv,” Jamala said, speaking in the U.K. the following week. And the show did go on, if a little late. “For me, it was really important sign for the whole world that despite of everything, we are fighting our front-line war, (for) our culture, our heritage, for our history,” she said of the concert in Kyiv last Friday.“Qirim” expands on the connection Jamala felt with her heritage when she perform...Five challenges educators face amid Teacher Appreciation Week

(The Hill) - Educators across the country are celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week amid a bevy of challenges facing their profession, some long-standing and others lingering from recent struggles with COVID-19.While teachers take advantage of the discounts and deals from companies and occasional gifts from students this week, they are also using the extra attention to highlight problems in their field. Here are five challenges educators are currently facing:Fights for pay increases Teachers have long called for higher salaries, arguing they are underpaid for the amount of work they do and in some cases can't afford to live in the communities they serve.A report released last year by the National Education Association found that in the past decade, adjusting for inflation, a classroom teacher’s salary decreased by 3.8 percent. “There is no better way to appreciate teachers than to pay them appropriately,” Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teach...Trump to appear at CNN town hall day after sex assault verdict

Former President Donald Trump will return to CNN's airwaves on Wednesday, joining the network for a two-hour town hall event in early-voting New Hampshire a day after a civil jury found him liable for sexually assaulting an advice columnist nearly three decades ago.The forum, which was publicly announced last week, was expected to be notable because it would be bringing together a network and a candidate who have long sparred with each other. But the stakes raised considerably Tuesday after jurors in New York found Trump had sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll, though it rejected her claim that he raped her. The jury awarded her $5 million in damages. Trump’s 2024 bid faces fresh uncertainty after E. Jean Carroll verdict While the civil trial verdict carries no criminal penalties, it nonetheless revives attention on the myriad investigations facing Trump, who was indicted in New York in March for hush money payments made to women who had accused him of sexual enc...Drier midweek but heaviest rain, flooding risks still to come

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Although some spots of Central Texas have received significant rain in the last few days, the heaviest of the rain is still to comeScattered storms and showers are likely to continue east of I-35 this morning before gradually lifting away by this afternoon. A few isolated storms may linger late day, but more of today's rain activity come before noon. Then comes our main event Mother's Day weekend.A deep trough of low pressure stalls west of the state, drawing in near-record amounts of atmospheric moisture and sending disturbances over the state. These will generate large complexes of torrential rain even more capable of producing flash flooding as the rain falls on more saturated soil by that time. Saturday looks to be the wettest day.A more widespread 3 out of 4 'moderate' flash flood risk Saturday includes parts of the Austin Metro area and the entire Hill Country, where flooding rain is most likely. Fans love Lego, as is evidenced by Legoland in Florida and California, the giant, still enormously popular Lego store at the Mall of America, and its general proliferation in toy aisles. So Brick Burger, a pop-up that will sell burgers with Lego brick-shaped buns for just two days in December in Minneapolis, should be a no-brainer.But would you pay $47 for one of these gimmicks? That’s what a ticket costs, and although it includes one beverage (beer, wine or soft drink), this could be record-setting as far as a burger price in the Twin Cities.A news release informs us that the burger is “a unique twist on a timeless classic” and that the pop-up, which will run out of an undisclosed storefront on Lyndale Avenue South, will offer “an unparalleled dining experience for families and burger enthusiasts alike.”Options include beef, veggie or chicken filet, and of course there will be Lego everywhere — Lego-brick walls, Lego-themed furniture and a brick-building station. Is this how yo...98.3 TRY Social Dilemma: My Husband Seems to Get Angry At the Smallest Things

He doesn’t usually get mad at me or anything that I do, but every other little problem just sets him off. It’s like he can’t even enjoy life anymore. I’m sad for him, but I don't know what to do. He swears he's a happy guy, but I know he's not. It's hard to be around him being so negative all the time. I feel like it's bringing me down. I'm thinking of separating from him, but I'm worried he'll really go downhill if that happens. What would you do? Hope you can helpCarsonWow, this is tough. I think Carson needs to have a heart-to-heart...DEC: Injured hiker carried over a mile to ambulance

Published Thu, 21 Nov 2024 21:14:57 GMT
Dear Amy: I have trouble insulating myself from the anxiety caused by my young adult sons’ life issues. They are 21 and 26 years old.I’ve done what I could as a mom to raise independent adults. They are doing well for the most part (the younger still in college), but we are close and they confide in me. This can really send me into a tailspin. Our older son has chosen a lifestyle that is built around being outdoors, but his work can be sporadic and he can be very scattered.I believe he may have some depression and doesn’t always take his meds for his ADHD. But I’m glad he confides in me, and I prompt him to take care of himself. Our younger son has chosen an extremely competitive academic and professional path. He seems to have built in good options for himself, but recently he had a fender bender in the car, and I worry about him.My anxiety about my sons really impacts me on a daily basis, and is not healthy. (My husband does not worry like this.)I worry about their futures and their...Russians take language test to avoid expulsion from Latvia

In a Stalinist-style skyscraper that dominates the skyline in Latvia's capital city, dozens of elderly Russians await to take a Latvian language exam as a sign of loyalty to a nation where they have been living for decades. The participants, mostly female, read through their notes to make any last-minute revisions. They feared they would be expelled if they failed. The war in Ukraine has changed the situation. The election campaign of last year was dominated with questions about national identity and concerns over security.Dimitrijs Trofimovs is the state secretary of the Interior Ministry. He said that the government has now demanded a language exam from the 20,000 Russian passport holders in the country, most of whom are elderly women. The loyalty and commitment to Russia among Russian citizens was a concern."I would be deported if I was to leave, as I've lived here for over 40 years," said Valentina, a 70-year-old former English teacher, Riga guide, and Riga native, after her last ...Latest news
